Formen antiker Diplomatie

Abstract

Diese Arbeit widmet sich der Erforschung eines antiken diplomatischen Zeremoniells. Da ein solches bislang abseits der Spätantike in der griechisch-römischen Welt schwer und kaum zu fassen war, wurden speziell Elemente im diplomatischen Kontext untersucht, die wesentliche Merkmale der symbolischen Kommunikation aufwiesen. Die umfangreichen Ergebnisse der Forschung der Vormoderne zum diplomatischen Zeremoniell erwiesen sich als wichtiger Vergleich, um die Einzigartigkeit der Antike zu erkennen, aber auch um für unklare Sachverhalte Lösungsvorschläge zu diskutieren. Des Weiteren wurden diplomatische Geschenke als eigener Unterpunkt der symbolischen Kommunikation betrachtet ebenso wie die monumentalen Inszenierungen diplomatischer Ergebnisse als dauerhafte Kommunikationsmittel mit dem eigenen und fremden Publikum. Die Arbeit konnte verschiedene Aspekte diplomatisch-zeremoniellen Verhaltens als Formen der antiken Diplomatie herausstellen, ermöglicht so neue Interpretationen und zeigt erneut die Wichtigkeit des fruchtbaren Feldes der symbolischen Kommunikation im diplomatischen Kontext.

This work is dedicated to the research of an ancient diplomatic ceremonial. Since such a thing has so far been elusive and difficult to grasp in the Greco-Roman world apart from Late Antiquity, elements in the diplomatic context that exhibited essential features of symbolic communication were specifically investigated. The extensive results of pre-modern research on diplomatic ceremonial proved to be an important comparison for recognising the uniqueness of antiquity, but also for discussing proposed solutions for unclear issues. Furthermore, diplomatic gifts were considered as a separate sub-issue of symbolic communication as well as the monumental stagings of diplomatic results as a permanent means of communication with one's own and foreign audiences. The work was able to highlight various aspects of diplomatic-ceremonial behaviour as forms of ancient diplomacy, thus enabling new interpretations and showing once again the importance of the fertile field of symbolic communication in the diplomatic context.
