Vormoderne Macht und Herrschaft
Becher, Matthias; Fischelmanns, Achim; Gahbler, Katharina
This volume gathers thirteen contributions from different scientific disciplines that are dedicated to questions of power, domination and gender in pre-modern times. For instance, it examines marital relationships of rulers, questions the function and stability of ruling systems and investigates patriarchy as an enduring ruling system as such. Thus, the volume offers individual case studies as well as theoretical reflections on the exercise of power and structures of domination, and then also takes a critical look on research approaches. It presents a highly complex, diverse and sometimes contradictory picture of power and domination. In conclusion, it offers (with reference to volume 11 of the publication series “Macht und Herrschaft”) critical reflections, outlines joining ideas and, thus, gives valuable suggestions for future investigations of “power”, “domination” and “gender” in a transcultural perspective.

Representing Poverty in the Anglophone Postcolonial World
Jain-Warden, Verena; Schmidt-Haberkamp, Barbara
Originally a concern primarily of social studies and economics, poverty has emerged as a significant thematic focus and analytical tool in literary and cultural studies in the last two decades. The "new poverty studies" are dedicated to analyzing representations of poverty and the poor in literature and the visual arts, in the news media and in social practices. They aim at exploring the frameworks of representation that impact the affective and ethical responses of audiences to disenfranchised groups such as the poor. The contributions to this volume focus on representations of poverty in the Anglophone postcolonial world, exploring, for example, contemporary discourses on poverty in the UK, filmic representations of Nairobi slums or the agency of the poor in literature from India.

Becher, Matthias; Hess, Hendrik
The concept of "contingency" provides new insights into the transition between the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages besides well-known master and research narratives. Natural disasters, famines, coincidences as well as the sudden change of social political structures, death, violence or threat of violence and the associated limitation of the personal freedom marked the experiences of humans in the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. The contingency experience can be characterised not only as an everyday day life experience but as a fundamental experience. The contributions in this volume analyse the contingency experiences and strategies in coping with them from the 5th century to the 8th century in Gaul and neighbouring areas in the dynamics between (Roman) imperium and ("Barbarian") regna.

Entfremdung in der Arbeitswelt des 21. Jahrhunderts
Rok, Cora
Mit der Analyse eines Romans von Philipp Schönthaler wirft die Autorin auch einen Blick auf zeitgenössische deutschsprachige Arbeitsrepräsentationen.; Starting out from Marx’s theory of alienated work, the ideology critique of the Frankfurt School, Sartre’s concept of mauvaise-foi, and more recent alienation theories, the present work investigates new and old forms of alienation in the working world of the 21st century, which has become a central subject especially in Italian Contemporary literature. Cora Rok examines selected novels and short stories by Christian Raimo, Tommaso Pincio, Nicola Lagioia, Michela Murgia, Andrea Bajani, Sebastiano Nata and Luca Ricci, in order to elaborate motifs, concepts of characters and techniques with which alienated working conditions and forms of consciousness are literarily represented. It is also analyzed if critique of alienation is being practiced in contemporary literature and if the possibilities of overcoming alienation are considered. By examining a novel by Philipp Schönthaler, Cora Rok also takes a look at contemporary German work representations.
