Dopamine is known as a neuromodulator involved in various cognitive functions. Research from animal and human studies identify a crucial role for the dopamine transporter in intercellular communication patterns. The present work summarizes findings of three empirical neuroimaging studies in which pharmacological, molecular and genetic approaches were utilized in the investigation of dopamine transporter effect on cognitive and behavioural processes. Using genetic and molecular markers as well as pharmacological compounds targeting the human dopamine transporter, the present work expands knowledge on its functional role in cognitive control and attention. The empirical work is embedded within a brief review of the human dopamine system and the influence of dopamine transporter on synaptic transmission. In sum, the text presents a broad view of dopaminergic influence on cognition and behaviour and delivers a specific insight into multimodal investigation of neuronal and cognitive interplay.
