| en |
dc.description.abstract | The formation of “progress“ - The development of nature formatsin chemistry (between 1882 and 1919) This paper examines the idea of “progress”, whose significance and relevance are often taken for granted in chemistry. The analysis focusses less on the justification for applying the label “advanced” to an idea or process than on the concept of “progress” as a linguistic phenomenon. The functions and effects of “progress” are analysed using methods from discourse and subject theory. Examples for the usage of the word “progress” are taken from transcripts of speeches by Carl Duisberg and Heinrich Caro. This paper binds together the diffuse usages of the word “progress” to a multifaceted whole; this is the “formation” of “progress”. The individual statements, each a fragmentary understanding, are ordered according to their systematic function in this discourse rather than according to the intentions of the speaker; the constitution of “progress” as system of statements is differentiated from the speaker’s subject position as a chemist. A further chapter explains the analytical methodology used. The concepts of discourse, chemical space (and specifically its extension into language) and subjectivation are introduced using the ideas of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler, and further clarified using language and metaphor from the discipline of biochemistry. The final chapter considers the effects of progress at the outer limits of chemical space, with emphasis on linguistic expressions of nature and its relationship to progress. This chapter uses selected text fragments that concern chemical substances at the extremes of their “life cycle”, apart from their presence in controlled chemical reactions. The source material for this analysis is a selection of chemical journals and the novel “Pfisters Mühle” by Wilhelm Raabe. This analysis demonstrates how organic-chemical reactions become inherently bound up with society as a whole, whereby the form this process takes is largely dictated by the understanding of “progress”. This conceptualisation produces series of chemical reactions, defines the criteria by which chemistry as a profession awards recognition, and structures our understanding of nature. | en |
