Systematic treatment of Sematophyllaceae (Musci) in Thailand

Abstract

<p>The taxonomic treatment of the Sematophyllaceae from Thailand was carried out based on about 2000 specimens. These specimens were on loan from herbaria: University of Aarhus, Denmark (AAU); Royal Forest Herbarium, Bangkok (BKF); The Natural History Museum, London (BM); Harvard University, Cambridge (FH); Brotherus Herbarium, Helsinki (HBR); Nationaal Herbarium Nederland, Leiden University branch, Leiden (L); Herbarium, The New York Botanic Garden, New York (NY); Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris (PC) and also included additional collections by the author preserved at herbarium Chulalonkorn University (BCU). Intensive morphological studies were carried out in all organs of each specimen; description, illustrations and photographs were taken under microscope studies. An artificial key, description, distribution, ecology, illustrations and photos of each species are provided. An enumeration of this moss family included 24 genera, 97 species, 5 varieties and 1 form. Three genera, <em>Pseudotrismegistia</em>, <em>Heterophyllium</em>, and <em>Pylaisiadelpha</em> are added to the flora of Thailand. In addition to many new provincial records, six species are reported new to Thailand, they are <em>Acroporium rufum</em> (Reinw. & Hornsch.) M. Fleisch., <em>A. sigmatodontium </em>(Müll & Hal.) M. Fleisch., <em>Brotherella erythrocaulis</em> (Mitt.) M. Fleisch., <em>Chionostomum baolocense </em>Tixier, C. <em>inicola </em>Tixier<em>, Rhaphidostichum piliferum</em> (Broth.) Broth., and five species new reported for Indochina are <em>Acroporium johannis-winkleri</em> Broth., <em>Aptychella speciosa</em> (Mitt.) Tixier, <em>Hageniella assamica</em> Dixon, <em>Taxithelium parvulum</em> (Broth. & Paris) Broth. and <em>Wijkia hornschuchii</em> (M. Fleisch.) H. A. Crum. The endemic to Thailand presented 11 species 2 varieties e.g., <em>Acroporium convolutifolium</em> Dixon, <em>A. hamulatum</em> (M. Fleisch.) M. Fleisch. var. <em>procumbens</em> (M. Fleisch.) Dixon,<em> A. secundum</em> (Reinw. & Hornsch.) M. Fleisch. var. <em>siamense</em> Dixon, <em>Mastopoma subfiliferum</em> Horikawa & Ando, <em>Rhaphidostichum leptocarpoides</em> (Broth.) Broth., <em>Sematophyllum subrevolutum</em> Broth., <em>Taxithelium clastobryoides</em> Dixon, <em>T. epapillosum</em> Dixon, <em>T. inerme</em> Tixier, <em>Trichosteleum trachycystis</em> Broth. and <em>Wijkia filipendula</em> (Dixon) H.A. Crum. The other two endemic species had been reported from Thailand e.g., <em>Sematophyllum latifolium</em> Broth. and <em>Taxithelium schmidtii</em> Broth. are excluded from this revision because of their specimens disappeared from herbarium. The phytogeography of this family is confirmed that Thailand is a traditional region forming a bridge between the Malayan-Philippine and Sino-Himalayan floras. The result of this present study is an inventory of Thai Sematophyllaceae and for publication as one part of “Moss Flora of Thailand” project. </p>
