dc.description.abstract | Tellurium-(iodine) polycations and trihalogenotellurium ions in salts with halogeno(oxo)metallates The present work deals with the synthesis and characterization of tellurium polycations, TeX3+ cations and tellurium iodine polycations with anions based on metal halides or -oxyhalides and a new modification of HfI4. All experiments were carried out under the conditions of chemical transport in evacuated glass ampoules in the temperature range between 150 °C and 220 °C. Polycationic, homoatomic tellurium clusters have been found in the double salts of (Te4)2[Mo2O2Cl8][ZrCl6] and (Te8)1,3(Te6)0,7[TaCl6]4, in the salts of Te4[ZrCl6], Te8[ZrCl6], Te7[MoOCl4]I and in the modulated composite crystal (Te4)1,12[Hf2O2Cl6]. The latter compound consists of stacked, partially reduced Te41,79+ polycations and a polymeric [Hf2O2Cl6]2- chain, in which hafnium is octahedrically coordinated by three chlorine and three oxygen atoms. (Te4)1,12[Hf2O2Cl6] shows diamagnetic behavior and is semiconducting in a temperature range between 22 °C and 150 °C with a band gap of 1.1(2) eV. The present work contains four structures with TeX3 + cations. The mixed crystal (TeCl3-xIx)2[ZrCl6] and (TeI3)[Hf2I9] crystallize in known structure types. (TeI3)2[Zr2Cl10] und (TeI3)2[WOCl4]3 form new structure types of which the latter is not fully understood yet. The structure type of the new HfI4 modification, β-HfI4, has already been theoretically predicted and deduced by supergroup-subgroup relationships from α-Lanthan. The structures of Te6I2[ZrCl6] und Te6I2[TaCl6]2 contain the already known, chair-shaped Te6I22+ polycation. A new, polymeric Te3I+ polycation has been found in Te3I[MoOCl4] whose idealized symmetry can be described by the rod group pc2m. The new compound shows paramagnetic behavior and below 5 K antiferromagnetic behavior with a coupling constant of J = -0.22 cm-1 and a magnetic moment of μexp = 1.62 μB. The needle-shaped crystals of Te3I[WOCl4] contain the polycation of Te3I[MoOCl4] as well as a new Te3I+ conformational isomer, which exhibits axial chirality. As of now both iodine-tellurium chains have the shortest, observed iodine-tellurium bond lengths of 2.6398(16) Å in Te3I[MoOCl4] and 2.638(3) Å in Te3I[WOCl4].
