dc.description.abstract | Reactions, Structures and Properties of Oxyhalides of Niobium and Tungsten The work presented is about the synthesis of crystalline one-dimensional polymeric halooxoniobates and -tungstates and their structural characterization via diffraction methods. Additionally the magnetic, electrical and optical properties were investigated. The crystal structure of tungsten oxychloride WOCl3 was determined on the basis of powder diffraction data. The structure is to be described as a columnar structure consisting of infinite [W2O4/2Cl4Cl2/2]-strands. Within the edge-sharing octahedra a short W-W-distance of 2.99 Å occurs. The reaction of WOCl3 with chlorides of mono- and bivalent metals (Tl+, K+, Ag+, Cu+, Pb2+, Hg2+) in evacuated ampoules at temperatures of about 350 °C leads to a family of mixed-valence tungsten compounds of the general formula Mn+1/n[W2O2Cl6]-. The compounds can be interpreted as intercalates of WOCl3 and are often non-stoichiometric with an under-occupation of the position of the cation Mn+. The structures were determined via single-crystal X-ray diffraction and are consisting of partially reduced, negatively charged WOCl3 analogous double strands. In dependence of the degree of the reduction a shortening of the W-W-distance appears. The double strands are connected to layers via the counter-cation Mn+. Dependent of the ionic radii of the cation, different sequences of the double-strands appear within the layers. Magnetic measurements are showing a temperature independent Pauli-paramagnetism; conductivity measurements together with band-structure calculations are pointing to a one-dimensional metallic behaviour. The reaction of niobium oxytrihalides NbOX3 (X = Cl, Br) with MIX (MI = K+, NH4+) in evacuated ampoules leads via a Lewis-acid-base reaction to compounds of the general formula [NbOX4]. Most important feature are polar one-dimensional single strands consisting of oxygen bridged [NbO2/2X4]--octahedra. In the case of the compound NH4[NbOBr4] the [NbOBr4]--strands are all pointing in the same direction with respect of their polarity. Therefore the crystals themselves are polar and are showing an SHG-effect (Second Harmonic Generation). The orientation of the ammonium ions were determined via neutron powder diffraction on a deuterated sample. As side products the compounds (NH4)2[Nb3O5Br7] and K2[Nb3O5Cl7] accrued, consisting of layered structures with two-dimensional polymeric [Nb3O10/2X2/2X6]2- anions. Reaction of oxytrihalides NbOX3 und WOX3 (X = Cl, Br) with MIX (MI = Cs, Rb, K, Tl) in an acidic aqueous system under hydrothermal conditions leads invariably to compounds with the chemical composition MI2[MVOX5]. With the exception of Tl2[WOBr5] all compounds investigated crystallize in the cubic system adapting the K2PtCl6-structure type. The [MVOX5]-octahedra, although being disordered, could be shown to offer a static trans-effect.
